I have also gotten a greater understanding of the meaning of dialectic in the sense of Benjamin, Adorno and Horkheimer refer to it. It can not only be explained as two sides of an argument but also as the metaphoric relations between an artist and a photographer as well as the relation between a magician and a surgeon.
Furthermore the movie shown at the lecture got me thinking. I was watching the countdown for the Swedish election this Sunday and was surprised how alike the political culture and the sport culture are. Not only have politicians opponents like athletes, they also have fans. When I’m attending soccer games I’m always fascinated of how people act together like one unity. They tend to sing the same songs and “dance” in the same way. When I was watching the countdown of the election these behaviours was shown but with political fans instead of sports fans. As long as it is just for fun and doesn’t hurt anyone, I think this is okay and even cheerful behaviour. However after I watched the movie at the lecture I draw the parallel to the second world war and Germany. I’ve thought a lot about this kind of group behaviour in the last couple of days. How come we can engage in arrangements like this without questioning it? Or are we fully aware what we are doing at all times? I know that many germans didn’t understand what they were doing. It is hard to write about this and perhaps the parallels are silly but I think it is a bit creepy how similar the events are. A swedish xenophobic party received over ten percent of the votes in this weekend’s election. I hope people voting for that party don’t really know what they’re doing either.
Adorno and Horkheimer wanted change. The lecture raised the question: how is the Media Technology being misused? This has made me think even more critically when watching TV and seeing commercials on the subway. Am I being tricked on a daily-basis? Haha, it sounds like I’ve gone all paranoid and perhaps that is the only solution to be a true philosopher. Anyway, I think it is very interesting to experience how this knowledge on different fields in philosophy affects me.
To write something about the seminar. It was a good seminar and I realized the value of perceiving information in swedish over english. I didn’t realize that the vocabulary has such a great importance. However I think this is very good practise, both to write in english but also to learn how to gain knowledge in another language.
We talked about universal and particular things. The universal are shared of all people, such as the knowledge of a chair for example. We can all picture the universal chair with four legs and perhaps a back side. The particular chair is on the contrary different to all of us. The particular things are only shared by some. I might think of a blue chair while you think of a green one. Adorno and Horkheimer argues that there only exists particular things.
During the seminar we also discussed in what ways the culture have revolutionary potentials according to Benjamin. Someine raised the examples of the camera and the telephone. They have really changed how our perspective on things. Nowadays everyone has a camera in their phone and can take snapshots of the everyday-life. Before the camera, the need for a camera didn't really exist but now we pretty much can't live without it.
I wonder if it's the same for social network sites, such as Facebook. I mean Facebook in specific will perhaps not change our everyday-life but along with all other sites I think it sure will. I can't imagine a world like we had for only 10 years ago. I remember not having broadband connection and only being able to log in to MSN messenger and sometimes the social network sites playahead and lunarstorm. Nowadays I'm on Facebook several times a day and I also use apps like Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat and WhatsApp on a daily-basis. What if we someday don't have smartphones and social media? Will strangers start talk to each other on the bus and will people not look at their phone as soon as they're feeling bored? Scary. I think the smartphones with the social media tool really has changed our way of living.

Hi,
SvaraRaderaI think your reflection is very clear and easy to understand, and I get a lot of things from your writing in this reflection. I like your example in Swedish election, although I am not a Swedish citizen, I think this political issue is almost the same with my country. The people in political party most likely to hide their bad reputation while there is an election process, and in order to win this election sometimes they use varied media technology to deceive the people so they will support them.
Also, I notify that in this year, people have addicted to certain technology, for example to social media, movie and many more. Almost all of this media can be used to give suggestion about certain paradigm to the user (people), as a result, I think people nowadays are very susceptible and easier to manipulate. In the end, media can be frightening if left without a control mechanism because it can change the culture and sociality with certain perception.
Hi Emelie,
SvaraRaderaI really like your reflections on this theme! I especially like how you use what you have learnt from this week's theme and apply it in an everyday context. I think it is a good thing to in some way "think outside the box" when reflecting on the readings and try to think about how the texts can teach us something about our lives today as well. I mean, even if these two texts were written many years ago, they are still relevant for us and our understanding of things today. I think that you really show that by comparing the events in Germany during the second world war with the Swedish election.
Keep up the good work! :)
Heyhey Emelie!
SvaraRaderaI really liked reading your reflection! You manage to summerize the whole theme in your reflection, and I like it! It seems like you got a clearer understanding between Adorno&Horkheimer and Benjamins texts. It is also interesting how you apply the movie we saw at the lecture with the swedish election. I think this behaviour is not just from enlightenment, it can also apply to our everyday lives and how media and politicians can take advantage of this. When you asked the question "how is the media technology being misused?" I started to wonder, maybe we as media technology student can 'turn' it in the right direction and use media in the right way.
I too, valued having our seminars in swedish than in english. Due to the hard and philosophic subject, it is still hard to understand in swedish, but even harder in english. When using the swedish vocabulary you still understood more, and it was easier to apply our knowledge to the texts. But as you wrote, it is a really good practice and it will probably be alot english-speaking when we start working too. Your reflection is detailed and it seems like you have learned alot during this week! Great job Emelie! (Klapp klapp)

I really like your reflection about the Swedish election! When me and my boyfriend were looking at some of the hearings of the party leaders in SVT he commented that the programs were made just like big sport events with panels before and after the hearing where the leader and his/hers performance where being discussed by political scientists and party members. These panels really felt like the sport panels you can see before and after big sport events, and this realization really made me feel a little bit uneasy. I don’t know, maybe it were like this the last election as well, only that I don’t remember it that way.
SvaraRaderaMuhammad, thank you for your comment. It's interesting that you feel like it's the same in your country. If you'd like I'm happy to talk more about it in class someday? :) it would be interesting to hear what you as a non-swedish citizen think of the election and also what the PR of politics is like in your country.
SvaraRaderaAnna, thank you for your comment! I'm glad you like my post. I will read some of yours later. :)
Hannah, haha, thank you for your comment! Yes, i agree with you that we as Media Technology students should start rescuing the world once we're done with our training (studies)! Anyway, in all seriousness, I think we can at least try to turn it around. Even though I think that would be super hard to manage, because "all truth is subjective/interpreted" (a posteriori) however I believe we can talk about this with people around us and encourage them to not just receive news/information but to analyze them critically in order to perceive their versoin of truth. Perhaps that was a bit dopey (flummigt?) but I hope you get kind of what I mean :p
Sofie, YES! That is exactly what I mean! Isn't scary?! Of course it's a good thing that people engage in such important questions and debates but... Yes, I'm not familiar with this feeling and it's weird. I'm a big fan of 1984, V for Vendetta, the Hunger Games and Divergent which are stories about a future dystopia. I think it's interesting to see correlations between these stories and today's society even though it's scary sometimes.
Hello, I really like your reflection, it was very understandable, interesting and entertaining. I liked that you used the lessons learned in a daily context, making the ideas you learned with this topic more understandable. The use of media technologies for the manipulation of society is something that happens in many countries of the world especially when it comes to political issues. However in some cases the misuse of the media is reflected more in some countries than in others, for example, in my country (Venezuela) the current government controls most of the media and used to deceive society into believing that nothing is going wrong in the country, that insecurity is not a problem, there is no inflation and shortages of basic commodities is a lie, when in fact the true is totally opposite. I am sure that like in my country in many other same things happens with greater magnitude than another.

Many of above comments mentions things I've thought about and repeating is just a waste of time. You have some really good reflections and your examples are really good. You displays a new view on the subject and you have developed since your last post - which is fun to see (think that's the point with the seminars and lectures). How you connect the election is just awesome!
SvaraRaderaGood work again!
